My first post for the year is an excerpt from Charles Dickens 'David Copperfield'. It contains what has become a very popular maxim on procrastination - one of my greatest 'vices', and one that must be conquered this year.
'My dear young friend', said Micawber, 'I am older than you; a man of some experience in life, and - and of some experience, in short, in difficulties, generally speaking. At present, and until something turns up (which I am, I may say, hourly expecting), I have nothing to bestow but advice. Still my advice is so far worth taking that - in short, that I have never taken it myself, and am the' - here Mr Micawber, who had been beaming and smiling, all over his head and face, up to the present moment, checked himself and frowned - 'the miserable wretch you behold.'
...
'...My advice is, never do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time. Collar him!'
...
'My other piece of advice, Copperfield,' said Mr Micawber, 'you know. Annual income, twenty pounds; annual expenditure, nineteen ninety-six; result, happiness. Annual income, twenty pounds; annual expenditure, twenty pounds ought and six; result, misery. The blossom is blighted, the leaf is withered, the God of the day goes down upon the dreary scene, and - and, in short, you are for ever floored. As I am!'

BLOGSVILLE BFF! HAPPY NEW YEAR! I had no idea that that is where that quote came from! Amazing!!
OK, so no time wasting and no over spending, let's do this!!!! hahahaha
Dickens was so right! Where was he when I was burning my salary like air?
I really agree with Anonymous on the saving thing though. I need to convert all those wasted hours to their monetary equivalents. Any ideas?
Hate to do this (I feel your anguish man, truly) but some blogging sprite has forced me yet again (at gunpoint) to tag you. Check my Media Nemesis blog for details.
Annual income, twenty pounds; annual expenditure, nineteen ninety-six; result, happiness. Annual income, twenty pounds; annual expenditure, twenty pounds ought and six; result, misery
much needed. especially in this time of credit crunch, lol
Happy New year dude!
@Everyone: Sorry for the weeklong silence...been away for a bit. How are you guys doing?
@Danny: You need to man. The dude is just amazing. I'm a bit of a slow reader but I read Dickens even slower 'cos I find myself often taken a moment to wonder at how he constructs his words. Just awesome! The Screwtape Letters was an amazing book man. CS Lewis has two great qualities...a keen intellect...and clarity of expression.
@Just...Toluwa: Thank you Toluwa. How's the move to GA going? And I replied your comment.
@Temite: LOL! Shoe shopping ko!! mscheeeeew!!! I agree with you on the part about tomorrow though. Simple but very true. I wish you even more bliss Temi!!! xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
@Funms: I need to too. I need to make much more than a few, believe it. Have a great year Funmi.
@Afronuts: Happy new year to you too Afro! Yah Dickens rocks...royally!
@Riri: LOL...looking forward to reading your 'real' comment.
@Afrobabe: lol! darned right you should!!! Whats sexiness with a flabby stomach? lol
@Oyin: You like it? Well to each his own I guess.
@rayo: Hmm...I suppose I do. Love that you love it. And yah, it'd help to live it.LOL. That kinda rhymed didnt it? hehe
@Marjoram: Happy New year Marjie!!!
@Anonymous: Hmm...ver read or listened to 'Rich dad poor dad'? It might challenge your perspective on the 'saving for retirement' logic.
@Buttercup: Burrakoooopu!!!! I'll be praying for you booboo!!!
@StandTall: Ore mi atata!!! That's a good thing. Procrastination is never a virtue. I'm thanking God with you. Happy new year to you too!
@aloted: First of all, I've read your blog, so don't feed me the 'I'm a bit slow' BS...I don't believe it. The second quote is basically saying that you shouldn't live above your means. To rephrase it: if you earn 20 naira a year and spend 19 you're high and dry; if you earn 20 naira a year and spend 21; you're on the way to being drowned in debt. You see Mr. Micawber had failed to follow that rule and was so deep in debt that he lost everything he had and was thrown into Debtors Prison. Thats why he felt obligated to give David this piece of advice. Hope that straightens it out a bit. Happy New year!
@MissLove: Thanks for reading! Lol! Happy New year to you too!!!
@Jarrai: It seems that everyone is, Jarrai. Happy new year!!!
@Riri: LOL. Still expecting your 'real' comment then. Lose the 'e' before the 'ing'. As in 'enlightening'. Though I think that was a typo. It really isn't so complex. I think it's the grammar that makes it seem so. Remember that it was written 159 years ago. Basically its saying two things: dont procrastinate, and don't live above your means. Good luck with your exams!!!
@Vera: E tire me too o Vera. It's a horrific habit. God help us all.
@Shubby Doo: You just had to start the year with a potshot huh? LOL. How was your holiday? The jollificating must have been wonderful since I didn't see any trace of you anywhere in blogsville the whole time.
@SOLOMONSYDELLE: Happy to know you're happy to know that.LOL
@Oyin: ummm...actually I didn't even know I'd taken it off. Must have been when I was changing my random question. Oh someone used the same pic? That sucks! I feel scandalized!!! I'm going to your blog to see who it was. My own face? Ummmm.....HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLL NOOOOO!!!! LOL
@CaramelD: Caramel! How you dey? How's life in the village? LOL. Yah lets do this!!!! I wish it were that easy.
@Naughty Eyes: Man I'm trying to cook up ideas myself o. Ooooooooooooooooo!!!!!! Mscheeeeew! Another tag?????!!!! At gunpoint ko! Mscheeeeew!!! Anyway sha because na you...I dey go your blog now.
@bumight: Yup...timeless words. Happy new year too dude!!!!
Vilage life was just dandy, I tie wrapper with the best of them and my yam pounding skills are in still in top form ;) How was your break, are you cool?
I missed youuuuuuuuuuu!
Happy New Year dear!
And no procrastinating, it's 2009 :) {Wish I could tell myself the same lol}
Unfortunately, I am the queen of procrastination. Right now, I am trying to decide between doing my homework thats due 2mrw morning, or sleeping. Ahhh sleep wins.
I will stop procrastinating...tommorow!LOL
Okay, apart from the lovely lesson I have learned from this post, you just made me want to read David Copperfield...again.
Read it as a young dame!
@CaramelD: Pounding skills! LOL. I would never have known! I'm cool o, thank you. My break was rather lonesome aside from having a few swigs with some friends. Though I chose to have it that way I must admit.
@Lolia: I meeezed you too Lolly! LOL. Happy new year to you too! How was Nigeria? And the family? No procrastinating o! But I've already done enough of it after putting up this post. [sigh]
@NDQ: The Queen is back! Whats up now? Did you hit all the hot joints in Nigeria? Did you dazzle them with your superb intellect and well-shaved legs? Did you frazzook and frambooze them with your short jogging gear? :d hehehe!
P.S Don't go looking in the dictionary for 'frazzook' and 'frambooze' o!
@Jaycee: It's a lovely book. I went back to read it again after putting up this post. Still doing so. A young dame. LOL. You still are I'm sure...
Real Comment :
lol... i guess its not so complex then... anyhu like i said proocrastination i'm not part of that ..
but living above your means..hmmn..thats what i was talking about the other day with someone..i've been part of that ..not staying in my line ..trying to get on some other linbe..leaving above my means basically ..see u around!! xxx
my best parts:
'My dear young friend', said Micawber, 'I am older than you; a man of some experience in life, and - and of some experience, in short, in difficulties, generally speaking
and Still my advice is so far worth taking that - in short, that I have never taken it myself,
